Couponing FAQ Part 1 - Avoiding the 5 top "Newbie" Couponing Pitfalls
Disclaimer: This was written by a fellow WUCer (weusecoupons.com forum follower), but I thought it might be helpful to my beginning couponers!
By Shortpants 04/29/2011
It was March of 2010 when I first saw MrCoupon (Nathan) from WeUseCoupons.com on a Nightline special talking about this "Extreme Couponing" business. I watched that segment 5 or 6 times trying to catch the website address spelled out in Jell-O boxes in the driveway. LOL Once I finally had it, I was off! I lurked and read at WeUseCoupons.com for a month before I finally jumped in and joined the site (it's FREE, by the way... my favorite price! hehe), there was soooo much information there, I was like a kid in a candy store, reading and absorbing all that I could. The wealth of information that folks share out of the kindness of their hearts is simply astounding. So here I am a little over a year later, saving tons of money (LOL) and now sharing the information I have learned for couponing in Vermont and New England both as a Forum Leader at WeUseCoupons.com, and my own Blog, VTCouponer.
In my couponing travels, I not only fell into many of the Newbie Couponing Pitfalls myself, I read about them all the time on the forums. Here are all the things I have experienced / read about that are very common among new couponers and how to avoid them:
1 - I am so overwhelmed! This is too much! I don't know where to start!
This has got to be the TOP post I see from new couponers. Heck, I've been there myself, I know how you feel. But as with learning ANY new skill, learning to coupon takes TIME to perfect. It's not something that happens overnight. The best advice for newbies is to pick ONE store in your area to concentrate on first, only ONE, learn that store inside and out and get comfortable with couponing in general. I know, I know, there are soooo many great deals out there it's hard to not want to run out and grab them all! The problem with that arises that you end up spending MORE right off the bat rather than less, and/or you get so burnt out by taking on too much at first that you get overwhelmed and give up. Pick ONE store, grocery, box store, drugstore, it doesn't matter, once you get comfortable with couponing practices, wording, policies, idiosyncracies, etc at ONE store, it is much easier to learn others. Just relax, take your time, learn how to coupon correctly and courteously, and you will be couponing like a pro in no time!
2 - Hey wait, I'm spending MORE since I started couponing and I'm blowing my budget... what gives?
As mentioned above, this is a VERY common thing. First off, you are thinking, "I have ALL these coupons, I HAVE to use them!" The main reason seasoned couponers are so successful is because they know how to play the waiting game. Sales and coupons are cyclical, they always come around again. Wait for a sale on the item you have a coupon for, don't use it when the item is full price, and if there is no deal before the coupon expires, there will be another time, another sale and another coupon, I promise! The other thing I also mentioned above was the desire to run out and grab every deal, this can be a budget blower for sure! Even if the item is free, you have to remember tax, gas, buying coupons or newspapers, ink and paper for printing coupons, fillers, all the things that are just pocket change or dollars, and as we learned from one of the Golden Rules of Couponing, "Those cents and dollars add up!", well that works in reverse also. Those cents and dollars you are saving are quickly negated when you account for the "cost" of your couponing.
3 - I have all these coupons I'm never going to use, what do I do with them?
First off, let me tell you my perception of "coupons that I would never use in a million years" has changed dramatically since I first started couponing. I was way too eager to get rid of coupons that ended up being freebies or money makers down the road just because I wasn't patient enough. I now tell all new couponers to hang onto everything they get, with the exception of course being the things you are 100% sure you will not use, for instance: diaper or formula coupons when you don't have a baby, pet supply coupons when you don't have any animals, and so on. But if you are only 99.9% sure you will never use it, hang onto it. There is a wonderful RAOK (Random Act of Kindness) and FSOT (For Sale or Trade) forum at WeUseCoupons.com to give away or trade coupons you don't need. Worst case scenario, you don't use the coupon before it expires, in that case there are wonderful people right at WeUseCoupons.com that take expired coupon donations and send them to US Military bases overseas where they can use them up to 6 months past the expiration date.
4 - I'm finding all these printable coupons online, I'm printing them all, should I?
Yup, been there, done this one too. I printed everything I could get my hands on when I first started and ended up wasting alot of paper, ink, time clipping, and ended up with alot of expired printable coupons. I am much more selective about what I print now, the only time I print a coupon for something that isn't an sale that week is if it is a really hot coupon and quite possibly will be gone if I wait or if it's an item that I purchase regularly and again, know I will use the coupon. Forums like WeUseCoupons.com have lots of posts letting fellow couponers know when there is a hot coupon available for print. Over time you will find the balance of what you need to print and what you can pass on.
5 - I only have "ABC" store and they don't double or I live in *insert name of really small town here* and am very limited on stores, there is no way couponing will work for me, right?
The answer is yes, it will work for you to both situations. Sure, you won't get some of the deals you see some other couponers in other areas get, but I know many, MANY couponers that have NO stores that double and/or live in a VERY small town or rural area and they do phenomenal! It all goes back to learning and knowing your stores and putting the time into finding the best deals available to you in your particular area. You can Extreme Coupon pretty much ANYWHERE, except for places that don't take coupons, of course! LOL I live in a pretty rural area of VT and I still save anywhere from 50% to 85%, sometimes more, on my shopping trips, even at the stores that don't double.

FUN AND FRUGAL SPRING/SUMMER IDEAS FOR KIDS
Eggshell Sidewalk Chalk:
Materials Needed:
* 4-5 eggshells
* 1 tsp flour
* 1 tsp hot tap water
* food coloring, optional, use when you want colored chalk
Instructions:
* Wash and dry eggshells.
* Put in a bowl and grind into powder.
* Throw out any large pieces.
* Pour flour and hot water plus 1 TBSP of the eggshell powder in another bowl.
* Mix until mixture looks like paste.
* Add food coloring at this point if you wish.
* Shape and press the paste into the shape of chalk sticks.
* Roll up tightly in a strip of paper towels and allow to dry for about three days.
Homemade Watercolor Paints:
Materials needed:
*3 tbsp baking soda
*3 tbsp cornstarch
*3 tbsp vinegar
* 1 1/2 tsp light corn syrup
*food coloring
Instructions:
In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons each of baking soda, cornstarch, and vinegar with 1 1/2 teaspoons light corn syrup. Wait for the fizzing to subside, then seperate the mixture into several small containers or jar lids. Add eight drops of food coloring to each batch and mix well. Put a different color in each batch or combine colors to make new shades. Kids can either use the paint right away, or wait for them to harden, in which case, they'll need to use a wet brush before painting.
Homemade Sprinkler:
Materials needed:
*1 clean 2-liter soda bottle
*Knife or scissors
*Duct Tape
*Water hose
Instructions:
Just cut three 1-inch vertical slits in one side of a clean 2-liter soda bottle. Or make the slits at different angles so the water will squirt in different directions. Attach the nozzle of the hose to the bottle top with duct tape (make sure it's fastened on tightly). Turn on the tap, and let the fun begin!!
* please note duct tape is not waterproof, and the adheseive will eventually wear off from water usage.
Homemade Bubbles:

To make bubble wand, you’ll need:
*1 plastic coated wire hanger
*yarn
Instructions:
Straighten handle part of hanger. Reshape hanger portion to make a circle, approximately 18” in diameter. Wrap yarn tightly around circle portion of hanger and tie off.

Easter Clearance at Target
You'll learn pretty quickly that one of my favorite places to shop is Target. They're pretty good about coupons and they usually have AMAZING clearance sections to match with coupons. One of my favorite times to shop at Target is right after the holidays (Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween and Christmas). Everything is marked 50%-75% off and it's the perfect time to stock up on everything (besides candy) for the following year! Be sure to head over to Target for their after Easter Clearance! A frugal shopper never starts shopping for special occasions too early!
Here are a few of the items I purchased during Target's Easter clearance in 2010! (All except for the sippy cups..Brendan insisted that those be in the picture lol!) :)
Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee and K-mart should have their Easter items on clearance as well!

Cheap Cleaning Solutions!
This Article was written by Heidi Ramsey the author of Little People Wealth.
Every once in a while I get in a “super cleaning” mood. A couple of days ago I was in the midst of my cleaning flurry when my husband gave me a strange look and asked why on earth I had the car polish in the bedroom.
I like to clean with “unconventional” supplies. I find they work better, are usually cheaper, and don’t hurt my eyes and nose (or make me worry if my children are “helping” me clean). Here are a few of my recipes and tips:
Shaving Cream – Use shaving cream to clean the mirrors in your bathroom. It will make them shine! Plus, they will not fog up after you use the shower and for about 3-4 weeks if you see a spot a little toilet paper or corner of a towel will shine it back up – no windex required. BONUS! Let your preschool/kindergarten kids help you clean the mirrors and write letters in the shaving cream. It’s lots of fun and your mirror will be cleaned in the process.
Car Polish – I hardly ever (okay not in ten years) polish my car. I do, however, have car polish. You can find cheap polish at the dollar store. Use this to polish your bathroom counters, sinks, and faucets. It will then repel dirt and water for about a month (and shine them up). Super easy and good looking!
Homemade Cleaners – I live for my essential oils and homemade cleaners! When I was pregnant with my first I researched the different recipes online and then I tweeked them using my microbiology background to make sure that it really was killing the microbes that I wanted killed. Click the links to see my recipes for Disinfectant, Wood Floor Cleaner, and Glass Cleaner.
What are your homemade cleaner tips and questions?

Are free samples worth it?
Is there any value to ordering free samples? This post will alert you to the benefits of requesting free samples listed on my blog.
Free Samples
All companies want your business. They want tempt you to buy their product in any way possible. Sometimes that means offering you a free sample. Even though they are small I always sign up for them. They give me a chance to try a product I wouldn’t normally purchase. They fit in my purse or in the diaper bag perfectly, and they are awesome for travel. I have even seen posts on other blogs showcasing gift baskets made entirely of sample sized products and they turned out really nice!
They are free, it takes seconds of your time to sign up, and they usually come with coupons..what more could you ask for?!
Personal Information
Free sample request forms typically only ask for your name, address, and email. I recommend opening a Gmail account for freebie purposes; that way your personal account isn’t slammed with offers from companies. Almost every company you sign up for has a privacy policy in small type, or a box that you can uncheck so that they do not share your info. Look for these if you are concerned.
Companies getting your address could be a good thing. The amount of coupon mailers in my mailbox has increased since I began applying for these freebies!
There is also a fun trick with Gmail! If you have a gmail account you can type in your email address with a (.) anywhere in it and the email with still come to you.
For example:
* the.secrettosaving@gmail.com
* t.h.e.s.e.c.r.e.t.t.o.s.a.v.i.n.g@gmail.com
* the.secret.to.saving@gmail.com
* thesecret.tosaving@gmail.com
* Or any variation you can think of.
Why is this helpful? All of those photo offers, and freebies I post. You can sign up using your gmail variations. They will count as a new account, but the emails will all come to the same place! Pretty cool, huh?!
Company Newsletters
Signing up for company newsletters to get coupons and other freebies is a big plus in my book. They will send you recipes, coupons and other special offers. Again, I would use a special email address so your regular email address doesn't get slammed.
Most companies will send out an email monthly, some weekly. Either way, I love getting great coupons to use at the grocery store!
Review Companies
One more great way to score freebies and coupons is to sign up for these review companies. They will send you offers for freebies and coupons if you review what they send, or spread the word. These are all amazing and I belong to all of them! I have received several awesome freebies from them! Check them out!
* Vocalpoint
* Kraft First Taste
* Buzz Agent

I hope this helped open your eyes to the possibilities in the world of freebies, and offers! As always, if you have any questions just shoot me an email! I will do my best to answer!

How to build a stockpile!
Stock piling means never having to pay full price again.
*Stock·pile – A supply stored for future use, usually carefully accrued and maintained.
A stockpile is simply buying more than what you need for immediate use when prices are extremely low, so that you do not have to pay full price in the future. A stockpile can help you save quite the large sum of money!
Here are my tips for stockpiling:
Buy Multiples
To start a stockpile you will need multiple coupons. In order to get multiple coupons, you will need to buy multiple Sunday newspapers, dumpster/recycle bin dive or collect coupons from your friends and family or purchase bulk coupon inserts. The general rule is one coupon per family member residing in your household, but you can do more in the beginning when building your stockpile (I generally use 5, which is one more than the number of household members.)
Wait for Sales
When items go on sale at their lowest price (rock bottom price), that is when you want to use all your coupons. Say, for instance, that laundry detergent has gone on sale for $1 and you have a $0.25 coupon and your store will triple coupons. That makes the detergent just $0.25, which is a great price. So, if you have four $0.25 coupons then you could buy four bottles and pay just $0.25 per bottle! You may not need all four bottles this week or even next week, but you will use them eventually. This way, you get to pay a rock bottom price for laundry detergent and you won’t have to pay full price for it the next time you need it. You have enough to last you until the next time it goes on sale.
Sales Cycles
Stores run sales in cycles. Everything typically goes on sale about every 8 – 12 weeks. If you buy 8 – 12 weeks worth of everything when it goes on sale, then you will have enough to last you until the next time it goes on sale. If your family goes through one container of peanut butter a week, then go ahead and buy several containers. If your family only goes through one container a month, then maybe just buy a couple containers.
Buy Only What You Like
It is very important that you only stockpile foods and products that you know your family will actually use. Don’t buy 10 boxes of cereal that your family has never tried before or it may never get eaten. If your son doesn't like a certain brand of shampoo, don’t stockpile that brand, even if it’s FREE. If you won’t use it, what’s the point? By buying it you are just preventing someone who could actually use it from buying it and taking up valuable storage space in your home.
Watch Expiration Dates
You NEED to keep an eye on expiration dates when you stockpile. It is very important to rotate your stockpile. This means you need to put the new items you purchase at the back and keep the oldest products at the front where you can get to them. Keep in mind that most items expire (including toothpaste!)
Don’t Go Overboard
It’s very tempting to buy tons and tons of products – especially when they’re free. Please remember the 8 – 12 week sales cycle. It WILL go on sale again! You don’t have to buy 72 mustards right now (everyone got upset when a fellow couponer purchased over 50 mustards on TLC's Extreme Couponers). There is no need to be a shelf-clearer. Buy a few now, then buy a few again the next time it goes on sale. If you realize you’ve accumulated too much mustard, skip a few sales or donate a few.
If you build a stockpile and carefully maintain it you can save a lot of money and always have your favorite products on hand! No more running to the store at 4am because you’ve run out of baby wipes!

Why didn't my Register Reward print?
I think this is one of the most commonly asked questions about shopping at Wal-greens. We've all been there, even me! Wal-greens register rewards are really difficult to understand in the beginning! There are so many rules you have to remember, and for the beginner couponer (and sometimes experienced couponers too!) – they can really be confusing!
Here are a few common reasons for your register reward not printing:
1. You bought the wrong items. Register Rewards can be very picky! Make absolutely sure you picked up the exact size, variety and flavor featured in the ad. Sometimes more items will be included than what is pictured in the ad, but not typically. You need to buy exactly what is pictured if you plan on convincing the manager that you should have received a register reward.
2. You did not meet the purchase amount. If the register reward requires you to spend a certain amount (for example: Buy $10 worth of Pampers to receive a $5 Register Reward!) you must spend at least that amount. $9.99 is NOT the same as $10 when it comes to register rewards!
3. You used a Register Reward from the same brand. You cannot “roll” register reward deals. The register reward you use will cancel out the register reward that should print. This only applies to rewards from the same brand/company (for example you cannot use a Register Reward you received from purchasing a Procter and Gamble item towards the purchase of an additional Procter and Gamble item and expect an additional Register Reward in return.) If you use a register reward that was earned by buying a product manufactured by a completely different company, then your register reward should still print.
4. The register reward machine was not working. This actually does happen! Either the Register Rewards machine may be broken, or the Register Reward scenario is not in the system. If this happens, ask to have them re-ring your purchase at a different register.
5. You saw a black cat. You broke a mirror. You opened an umbrella inside. It's Friday the 13th. There’s a full moon. I’ll say it again: Walgreen’s register rewards can be difficult! Sometimes I am completely confused, and have absolutely no idea why my reward didn’t print!
Here are some rules to remember when using register rewards:
* You cannot have more coupons than items - register rewards are considered coupons! If you buy 2 items and plan to use 2 coupons on them, you will not be able to use a register reward also. You could, however add a very cheap item to your order, such as a pencil or 25 cent piece of candy (this is also known as a filler) to even out the item to coupon to item ratio.
* You cannot use a register reward on an item earning a register reward for the same deal. Register rewards from the same company cancel each other out. P&G makes a ton of products like Pampers and Proglide razors. If you buy Pampers and earn a register reward and you want to buy a Proglide razor and earn the register reward advertised for it, you can not use the Pampers register reward! If you do, the Proglide register reward will not print! However, you can use a register reward that was earned by buying a product from another company (such as Kimberly and Clark..aka Huggies) and the register reward will print. The Register Reward will say something like “compliments of (insert company here)” or look in the fine print for “(insert company here)”
* They expire much faster than most coupons! Two weeks is all they give you to use a register reward. If you don’t think you will be back in time to use it, go ahead and purchase something right then and use your register reward.
If you have any other questions or if this was confusing, please leave a comment with your question or send me an email! I want you to be able to shop at Walgreen’s with confidence!

Shopping at Wal-Greens
Wal-greens can be more complicated to shop than Target or Wal-Mart because of their many varieties of coupons. This guide will teach you how to shop at Wal-greens effectively.
Wal-greens Weekly Ad Coupons:
Weekly Ad Coupons are coupons found in the weekly store ad (who would have guessed?!). They usually advertise a price (Example: Nestle Candy for 39 cents) and most have a limit on how many items you can buy with the coupon (Example: limit of 6..check the fine print underneath the item to be sure). You must use the coupon in order to get the advertised coupon price. If the coupon says Nestle Candy 39¢, limit 6 then you can buy 6 Nestle candy bars and use the one coupon. Once the coupon is scanned it will subtract a certain amount that will make all 6 Nestle candy bars 39¢ a piece. Coupon etiquette would be to only purchase 6, however the register knows no limit and most cashiers aren't going to know the difference if the register doesn't beep. These coupons can be combined with all other coupons. Also, most stores don’t require you to cut them out! Just show the cashier the coupon you want to use and they will scan it or type in the coupon code.
Walgreens EasySaver Catalog Coupons:
The Walgreens EasySaver Catalog is found at the front of the store with the Walgreens Weekly Ad. The front of the booklet has Walgreens coupons called Instant Value Coupons – IVC. These coupons can be combined with manufacturer coupons. They usually have a limit of how many items you can use one coupon on but sometimes will work for more than the limit. These coupons do not have to be clipped either. *Note – these coupons do say “manufacturer coupon” but Walgreens treats them like store coupons. You CANNOT use an IVC, Wal-Green's ad coupon and manufacturer coupon towards the purchase of ONE item.
Walgreens Register Rewards:
Walgreens Register Rewards – RR – are manufacturer coupons that print out when your transaction is complete. They are coupons that are used on your next purchase. When doing a deal that earns Register Rewards you CAN use coupons! Coupons have no effect on the deal. Read THIS if your Register Reward doesn't print.
Coupon Rules:
Walgreens registers will not let you use more coupons than items purchased (excluding Walgreens Ad coupons & IVCs). You can buy 1 item, use an IVC and a manufacturer coupon and it will be fine, but if you try to use a RR too it will not let you. Add a cheap candy or pencil to your order and the register will accept the coupon. If you want to buy 1 item you cannot use 2 RRs to pay for it because the number of coupons is exceeding the number of items, however you can add a filler item (think $.10, $.25 or $.35!).
Coupon Order:
The best order to give the cashier your coupons is Manufacturer Coupons, then IVCs, then Walgreens Ad Coupons, then Register Rewards. That way there is a possibility for overage (most stores will not allow it).
The Walgreens coupon policy is now available online!
